Share Tweetcenter_img Share 23 Views   no discussions General-Secretary of DPSU, Thomas LetangA new executive will be elected when the members of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) gather at the Union’s headquarters on Valley Road for their biannual conference on Wednesday evening.Members will vote for a new executive for the period 2012 to 2014 however the post for general-secretary is not up for election.The Conference is being held under the theme “Empowering Workers through Transparency and Advocacy” and the organization is expected to honour two of their members for what the General-Secretary Thomas Letang described as “dedicated and unwavering support for a number of years”.Former general-secretary and president Arthur Smith and Clifford Celaire are the special awardees for this evening’s conference and Attorney at law Eluid Charles will deliver the featured address.According to Letang, several issues and challenges which employees face will also be discussed.“There are many issues confronting employees not only in Dominica but all over. The whole question of benefits, the whole question of the various economies and the global economic crisis and how it impacts on public officers, how it impacts on employees on a whole and our conference will seek to address those issues”.Letang reported further that the Union will also provide a report on the “progress and development” of the organization.“We have seen a steady growth in membership for the past two years something that no other union in the region has been experiencing. We have seen the Union itself in a better financial situation being able to take care better care of itself, we have seen inclusion and innovative services through our members and very, very encouraging is that we have seen signs of greater support and solidarity among our membership”. The Union will also report on two successful resolutions; one regarding a “statement made by government’s productivity consultant at the time” and the other regarding “salary negotiations for the period 2010/2012 and the classification exercise”.The formal opening of the conference is scheduled for 6:30pm today at the Union’s office on Valley Road and the business session on Thursday morning 8:30.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more
