So, I talked with a DHR representative in Tuscaloosa, where I’m from, and she suggested Heart Gallery, which is a private, non-profit organization. Professional photographers volunteer their time to take photographs of the foster children so these photographs can be displayed in galleries across the state.“Prospective parents are invited to view the exhibit and to hear audio interviews with these children so they can know something about a child before they ever sit down and talk to him or her.”Sara Jo Burks, a director of the Miss Troy University pageant, said Yessick is an outstanding advocate for the children in Alabama’s foster care system. Tyson Fury reveals suicide attempt

first_imgRelatedPosts Tyson Fury to Anthony Joshua: Don’t risk fighting Usyk Anthony Joshua wants Tyson Fury, Wilder fight 64% of Nigerian employees risk burnout, severe mental health — Report Former world champion boxer Tyson Fury has revealed how close he came to committing suicide during his long battle with mental health problems. The 31-year-old was crowned world heavyweight champion in 2015 when he beat Wladimir Klitschko in Germany before his life spiralled out of control. Fury fell into depression and battled alcohol and drugs problems which culminated in an aborted suicide attempt before he turned his life around. In an ITV documentary to be shown next week, he reveals: “One day I woke up and thought ‘today’s the day I end it all’. “I was heading towards this bridge, I was going to smash the car into the bridge at very high speed, I just didn’t have the ambition to live anymore. “Before I got to the bridge I heard a voice saying ‘don’t do this, you’re going to destroy your family’s life’ and I immediately pulled the car over and that was the first time I thought, ‘right, now or never. I need to get well immediately.’” In the months that followed, Fury sought help from psychiatric experts and then embarked on a weight loss programme after ballooning to 28 stone. Fury shed an incredible nine stone in less than two years before making his comeback to the boxing ring in 2018 against the little known Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta. After two underwhelming performances Fury shocked the boxing world by taking on undefeated WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder in December 2018. That fight ended in a draw, with Fury surviving two knockdowns, including an incredible 11th minute blow, which saw him beat the count and climb back off the canvas. Ahead of facing “the Bronze Bomber” later this month, Fury insists he isn’t completely over his mental health woes but now knows how to combat them.Tags: mental healthTyson FuryWladimir Klitschkolast_img read more

Lakers’ Frank Vogel was among the first to give Paul George an NBA chance

first_imgEL SEGUNDO — The last time they spoke, fires raged in the hills of Los Angeles. When the Getty Fire threatened several residential areas in late October, there were more than a few NBA players who were fearful they might have to relocate, Paul George among them. That was when he heard from his old coach, Frank Vogel, offering him a place to stay if he needed it.“He reached out, giving support, ‘If you need anything,’” George said last week. “If we need a house to stay, he opened the doors for me. But he’s got his thing going, and I got mine.”That’s the kind of relationship Vogel and George, a player-and-coach tandem that had a six-year run with the Indiana Pacers have now. It’s close, like family, but distant, which can also be like family. Even though they share the same city, and even though they presumably see each other’s faces on billboards, hear each other’s voices in advertisements and think a good deal about how to beat one another, there’s space between them that’s hard to bridge – and yet in times of crisis, it’s not that hard at all. Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and other NBA stars pay tribute to Kobe Bryant For his part, Vogel downplayed the exchange in October, saying it was “just what a friend would do.” But what else is he supposed to say two days before a Lakers-Clippers showdown on Christmas Day at Staples Center? Even while Anthony Davis and LeBron James are questionable for the game, Vogel’s connection with George, who missed the first Lakers-Clippers meeting, gives the nationally televised matchup a bit of an edge.“I love those guys and they’ll be family forever,” he said, lumping in George with other old Pacers. “But on Christmas Day, they’re the enemy. He’s the enemy, I guess. The Clippers are.”As much as Vogel might play down the relationship, the two men are inexorably linked for the effect they had on one another’s careers.George was a raw rookie when Vogel took over as interim coach in 2011, and it was Vogel who gave him his first career start. As George grew into a headlining superstar in Indiana, Vogel’s teams took off, reaching the Eastern Conference finals in back-to-back seasons in 2013 and 2014.There’s a certain irony that the coach who would shelter him from the fire was the one who threw him into it at the beginning of his career. Video: What LeBron James said about Jacob Blake … ‘Black people in America are scared’ Photos: Lakers defeat Trail Blazers in Game 4 of first-round playoff series For Lakers’ LeBron James, Jacob Blake’s shooting is bigger issue than a big Game 4 victory center_img “He definitely helped with my development by throwing me out there, throwing me into the fire, giving me that experience, letting me learn on the fly, make mistakes,” George said. “He definitely helped with my development of just film work, watching games, watching plays. The experience is what helped the most by allowing me to play and letting me learn and just being out there.”True to form, Vogel said George’s minutes were ones he earned by playing defense.“Offensively, he was very raw and had a long way to go from a development standpoint and from perimeter shooting and passing the basketball,” he said. “You can’t grow if you’re not getting opportunities on the court. … Since he had in his rookie year the ability to stay on the floor defensively, that’s what gave me confidence to throw him out there for long stretches and help him grow his offensive game.”Related Articles George’s injury in 2014, a compound fracture of his lower leg, had a disastrous impact for Indiana the following year, and it was the first big backstep for Vogel’s Pacers. After the next season, when the Pacers stagnated and lost in the first round, Vogel and Indiana parted ways in 2016. A year later, George requested a trade out of Indiana.Nate McMillan recently acknowledged it was odd to see Vogel teaming up with LeBron James, the player that those Pacers attempted to unseat for years. But in a way, George seemed to understand why the Lakers scooped him up. In grinding seasons, Vogel helped pick up the team.“My whole time what made it so remarkable and so great with the system that he had was just positive, very positive influence, and it was great,” George said. “Tough days, long days, tough road trips, he always found the positive and it was great. It was a great flow to the locker room and it translated onto the court.”BRIEFLYThe Lakers said James (thoracic muscle strain) and Davis (right knee soreness) are both questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Clippers. … The Lakers participated in Secret Santa on Monday. Four Affordable Ways to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Old Windows

first_imgWindowsFor the time being, tax credits are likely to be available for some window replacements (those with glazing that meets IRS requirements) and a few other window attachment options. The best place to go to get unbiased information on window replacement options is the Efficient Windows Collaborative.Remember that you might not need to replace your windows unless they are actually falling apart, if they are unsafe, or if they no longer operate. If your windows are sound and function well, consider other window attachment options.2. Low-e storm windows deliver a lot of performanceNewer, airtight storm windows with low-e coatings can rival the performance of just about any window replacement. Interior units are easy to install, although exterior units do a much better job of protecting your existing windows. And now you can buy low-e storms with high solar heat gain for colder climates and low solar heat gain for warmer ones. Double- and triple-tracked storms come with operable screen panels so you can easily operate your windows for natural cooling. For that same size window (30″ by 60″), you can get a low-e storm window, installed, for about $60 for interior plastic single fixed panel (not low-e) to $160 for exterior low-e triple-tracked storm windows.3. Window films can be temporary or permanentThere are two primary types of window films: more permanent, surface-applied films and the stretch-plastic that you install temporarily to interior window trim. Surface-applied films are now rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council and have a wide range of performance properties: U-factor, solar heat gain coefficient, and visual transmittance. Standard solar control window films run about $80 installed while spectrally selective films are about $125 per typical window. The stretch-plastic seasonal film kits you tack onto window trim can be installed relatively airtight for better thermal comfort and reduced heating in cold climates and typically run about $15 at any local building supply or hardware store.4. Exterior roller shades keep the sun outIf keeping the heat out is your main concern, the most effective window treatment options are exterior; you keep the sun out before it gets in. While retractable awnings and even fixed awnings tend to be a bit pricey, economical exterior roller shades are available for as little as $25 per window.New information resource on window attachmentsWhile the best place for clear, unbiased information and guidance on replacing windows is the Efficient Windows Collaborative, there is a new resource dedicated to information and guidance on window attachments. The site includes information on products to purchase as well as a Q&A forum where you can post any question, including questions (and then get answers) for your particular situation.Special note: What about lead-based paint? While most window attachments can be installed without any sort of lead-based paint disturbance or legally-required management, don’t let the issue of loose and peeling lead-based paint slide as you work on any aspect of your home(s), but particularly windows. For more information on managing the lead-based paint hazard, see EPA resources. WindowsAll About Glazing Options There are many reasons to replace windows, but energy efficiency is not the best reason. Replacing the windows in an older house is one of the most expensive energy upgrades you can make. To improve performance of existing windows, consider storm windows, window films, and exterior roller shades before buying replacement windows. But which option is the best bang for the buck?1. Replacement windows — the most expensive optionYou have three options when replacing windows: full window replacement, insert windows (the old sashes come out and a whole new window inserts into your old window frame), and sash replacement (primarily for double-hung windows, this option requires jamb liners into which new sashes are installed). A typical full window replacement (a window 30 inches wide and 60 inches tall) will run about $400 to $600; insert replacements cost about $300 to $400, and sash replacement kits cost around $250 to $300.
