Liverpool 2-0 Watford: Joe Allen and Roberto Firmino extend unbeaten Anfield run

first_imgLiverpool eased to victory over Watford on Sunday evening in the Premier League.Joe Allen and Roberto Firmino scored the goals to extend their unbeaten run at Anfield to 11 games. With nothing to compete for in the Premier League, it was perhaps unsurprising a little rhythm in play was missing on Merseyside.Liverpool, predictably given the number of changes (eight) made from the side that secured a place in the Europa League final mid-week, seemed a little disjointed.Watford started off the more confident, with Odion Ighalo, who has scored just three goals this calendar year, looking sharp and eager to make his mark early on, even attempting to catch Simon Mignolet out from 40 yards. But the Hornets, while comfortable when in possession and dangerous on the counter attack, were the first to concede at Anfield.Christian Benteke headed a long ball forward into the path of Joe Allen, and the Wales international made no mistake, slotting the ball past Heurelho Gomes into the bottom corner with 35 minutes on the clock. The goal did lift Liverpool, but their performance still left much to be desired as the first half came to a close. As with the opening 45 minutes, though, Watford, for all their glimpses at goal, failed to really test Mignolet and his back line. And Roberto Firmino capitalised on the visitors’ failure to take their chances, doubling his side’s lead and wrapping up the three points in the 75th minute. The Hornets’ defenders, after sloppily giving the ball away in the middle of the park, allowed the forward to run towards goal, and he needed no further invitation to test Gomes. His subsequent strike rolled under the hand of the goalkeeper, who may feel he could have done better.Liverpool eased to victory, heaping further pressure on Quique Sánchez Flores ahead of his end of season review.
