Pakistan: RSF calls for end to Geo TV’s illegal suspension

According to the network’s CEO, Ibrahim Rahman, the channels are off the air in 80% of the country. The Pakistani government has denied responsibility for blocking Geo TV. So has the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), which issued a statement on 2 April instructing cable operators to restore the network’s channels. All eyes are turned on the Pakistani military, whose activities often receive critical coverage by Geo TV. The military control cable networks in all districts and therefore effectively control Geo TV’s distribution, which had already been blocked in military garrisons and military residential areas since early March. Two armed men meanwhile tried to break into Geo News presenter Saleem Safi’s home in Islamabad on 4 April, attacking the security guard who stopped them. The attack came shortly after Safi posted an article on the Jang news website (owned by the same media group as Geo TV) in which he accused the military of trying to influence the general elections in mid-2018.“The round-the-clock blocking of Geo TV and the attack on one of its journalists constitute yet new evidence, if any were needed, of the Pakistani’s military’s complete ascendancy over the country’s civilian authorities,” said Daniel Bastard, the head of RSF’s Asia-Pacific desk. United trust Rooney to deliver

first_img United have been linked with a number of strikers this summer including Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Tottenham forward Harry Kane and Edinson Cavani of Paris St Germain. But Press Association Sport understands United are unlikely to bid for another striker before the transfer window shuts on September 2. Rooney played in midfield at times last season, but it is understood that Van Gaal wants to use his captain as a central striker in a 4-3-3 formation this campaign. The 29-year-old played as a lone frontman in United’s tour opener against Club America in Seattle on Saturday and he is likely to remain up front this season. Even if Rooney gets injured before the transfer window shuts, senior sources at the club insist Van Gaal would probably refrain from dipping into the market for a striker. Van Gaal is understood to be confident about the number of goals he has in his team. The United manager has been impressed by Memphis Depay’s shooting technique and free-kicks in training so he believes the £25million winger can replicate the kind of form that saw him bang in 22 league goals for PSV Eindhoven last term. Depay was encouraged by the way he combined with Rooney in the 1-0 win over Club America at CenturyLink Field. Manchester United are prepared to start the season with Wayne Rooney as their only established senior striker. “Wayne coached me a lot through the game and talked to me about which position I should take and when to defend,” the Dutchman said. “We have to form a duo and I have the right feeling with him. It’s an honour to play with such a legend like Wazza.” There is also a feeling among senior figures at the club that Hernandez will come good at United this season despite being offloaded to Real Madrid last term. Van Gaal revealed the Mexican will join up with United’s touring party on Saturday and has challenged him to show his worth. “He can prove himself again and now Falcao and Van Persie are gone, his chances are better,” the United manager said. A decision on whether to send 19-year-old Wilson out on loan will be taken later in the transfer window. The teenager is likely to get a run-out in United’s second tour match against the San Jose Earthquakes, which takes place at the Avaya Stadium on Tuesday night. Louis van Gaal has sold Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce and decided against signing Radamel Falcao on a permanent basis from Monaco. That means the United boss has been left with Rooney, unproven youngster James Wilson, and Javier Hernandez, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, in the forwards department. A Journey of 1001 Days of Geocaching

The journey began on September 22, 2007 and ended that day at HQ. Kiet authored this guest blog. This is his story.  These are his words.  Here’s what you can learn from a team that completed a geocaching streak of 1001 days. Kiet and Jill Callies with daughter McKenzie. Geocaching username “keitc” When we started our streak on September 22, 2007, it was a reboot of a previous 41-day streak, broken by work commitments, which just whetted our whistles for the big one. No other commitments would interrupt our next streak until June 18, 2010 – a thousand and one days later. In that time, if stringing our finds together like a necklace of pearls, we traveled nearly 60,000 miles and made finds in 15 states. The original streak probably began as a pacesetter for reaching a milestone by the year’s end. The big streak was to prove we could go all the way. We started setting the goal of 100 days, then a year and, if a year, why not a thousand days. Then, again, why not be literary, like A Thousand and One Arabian Nights, A Thousand and One Geocaching Days.I almost carried the whole load alone. However, this was never meant to be a loner’s endeavor. My wife and daughter stepped in my place a couple of times. Once, during one of life’s frustrating moments of defeatism when I decided to give up on everything and pick a fight with the world, my wife, unable to witness the regret I would face in the after-moment, took my daughter and made a find to keep the streak alive. The next generation of geocacher, McKenzie Callies. Now, to maintain such a streak, the quality of some caches suffers. Though we have seen and discovered some amazing things in the course of our adventures, both obvious and hidden, we often had to settle for some mundane finds – a film canister tucked under a lamp post cover or inside a guard rail, which can be demotivating when these are the majority of your finds. Then I stumbled upon the Danboard and Stormtroopers 365 photo projects and was inspired. One of the things we enjoy about geocaching is the context of location. There is a reason why someone chose a particular location and decided to share it with others. Now you can argue whether the location is worth sharing, but you cannot deny that it now has context, a story. I decided to lay another narrative on top, and my medium was Legos and Star Wars.Legos are small and portable, perfect for travel, and like in Star Wars, we as geocachers use technology to get us close to the truth, the cache, and then use the mystical, or our geo-senses, to actually find it. Over-thinking it? Probably. I grew up under the strong influence of the original trilogy, and besides that, Star Wars is just so cool. On Day 779, I introduced the Star Wars Lego storyline and have managed a few chuckles here and there.Click the picture to view Kiet Callies Flickr pageNow that the streak is over, and I have had time to digest it all, I will tell you that I did experience withdrawal and guilt the next day, June 19th. What’s next? In celebration of geocaching’s 10-year anniversary, to find a cache placed in each month of geocaching’s existence. Isn’t setting goals fun?Share with your Friends:Morelast_img read more

WordPress Issues Critical Update

first_imgWordPress has detected and fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. WordPress 3.04 contains the fix that founder Matt Mullenweg calls “critical.” Hosted WordPress.com customers don’t need to worry, as security updates happen automatically for them.XSS attacks can be used to steal login information or other sensitive information from visitors to a particular site. According to ReadWriteWeb staff hacker Tyler Gilles, this is similar to XSS vulnerability that affected Twitter users recently. He notes that WordPress’s fix is similar to Twitter’s.The vulnerability was found in KSES, WordPress’s HTML sanitation library. WordPress was first notified of the issue by Mauro Gentile and Jon Cave.Mullenweg writes that although the WordPress team has given the update “a lot of thought and review” it would like to have the update reviewed by as many security researchers as possible and invites everyone to look at the changeset.Developers wanting to avoid XSS vulnerabilities in their own projects may wish to check out XSS (Cross Site Scripting) Prevention Cheat Sheet from The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP). According to OWASP, XSS is the second most common security vulnerability on the web. US pending home sales rose a slight 02 per cent in November

first_imgWASHINGTON – Slightly more people signed contracts in November to buy homes — with pending sales rising just 0.2 per cent as the housing market copes with a dwindling supply of properties on the market. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that its index of pending home sales was 109.5 in November. The modest increase follows a 3.5 per cent increase in October.More Americans are shopping for homes as the economy has improved. The low 4.1 per cent unemployment rate has helped lift demand from would-be homebuyers, as the slow recovery from the 2008 financial crisis has built up momentum after years of steady but unspectacular gains. Yet the demand has done little to bring more home-sellers into the market, causing a shortage of listings that has pushed up prices and spawned a rush to buy in many metro areas. In November, the number of signed contracts rose in the Northeast and Midwest but slumped in the South and West.Pending sales contracts are a barometer of future purchases. Sales are typically completed a month or two after a contract is signed. The pending sales index has improved just 0.8 per cent over the past year, as would-be buyers are finding that fewer homes are being listed for sale. The number of homes listed for sale has dropped nearly 10 per cent over the past year, the Realtors said earlier this month. Many homeowners are choosing to build up their equity or find themselves unable to afford another house if they sell their current residence. This dynamic has contributed to a 6.2 per cent jump in home prices over the 12 months, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller index. With home prices rising faster than incomes, it’s leading to the risk that people seeking homes could be priced out of the market. This, in turn, has caused homes to remain on the market for fewer days. Some of the financial pressures from rising home prices have been minimized by cheaper borrowing costs.Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said last week that the rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 3.94 per cent, down from 4.30 per cent a year ago.last_img read more

Egyptians vote in referendum to extend President Sisis rule

first_imgCairo: Egyptians voted Saturday in a referendum that aims to cement the rule of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former coup leader who presents himself as a rock of stability in a turbulent region. Voters were being asked to back amendments to the constitution to allow Sisi, 64, to run for another six-year term while boosting his control over the judiciary and giving the military even greater influence in political life. The three-day referendum bucks the trend of North Africa’s mini-Arab Spring, in which mass pro-democracy protests this month swept away veteran presidents in Algeria and Sudan. Out on the streets, his supporters waved flags bearing their campaign motto: “Do the Right,” as they pressed passers-by to turn out and vote ‘Yes’. At a polling station in Manyal, a Cairo suburb overlooking the Nile, Mohamed Abdel Salam, 45, said he was voting enthusiastically in support of the changes. “I don’t care about the presidential terms,” he said. “Sisi could stay forever as long as he’s doing his job… and he has already done a lot”. Sisi won his first term as president in 2014, a year after he led the army in overthowing elected Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against his single turbulent in power.last_img read more
