In its first meeting the recently formed state autorickshaw committee on Friday gave auto drivers across Kolkata a week to submit their details as well as registration papers of their vehicles to avoid “strict action” The decision is one of several measures taken by the state transport department following a series of recent mishaps involving autos including the September 17 accident at Golibari which claimed the life of a college student “A seven-day deadline has been set for all autos plying the 125 routes in the city to submit details of the driver and vehicle” said a senior official of transport department present at the meeting “The number of unregistered autorickshaws is at par with registered ones in the city Our main focus is to find out the exact number of unregistered autos plying on city roads We will soon resolve all issues that passengers have been complaining about” state Transport Minister Subhendu Adhikari told The Indian Express Earlier this week Adhikari had announced his decision to introduce an autorickshaw policy which sources said is likely to happen before Durga puja According to a transport official around 40000 autos out of the 70000 operating in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) are still plying without important documents like licence insurance certificate registration certificate and route permit Speeding taking illegal turns and parking in unauthorised areas are some of the common traffic violations made by auto drivers “They hardly follow rules in the city When passengers argue they flaunt their local political support A stringent policy is the need of the hour for the safety of passengers” said an official “We have asked them (auto drivers) to submit details like vehicle number their name phone numbers photo ID proof and number of vehicle’s owner to the concerned regional transport officer or the public vehicles department at Beltala by September 30 Once we receive all the information we will organise the data” said a senior transport official The meeting was also attended by representatives of regional transport offices and auto unions Sources said that state officials warned the union representatives against increasing fares Another point that was discussed was auto drivers changing routes to make extra money A four-member task force has been set up by the government to draft a new policy said sources adding that it will be taking legal opinion from the Calcutta high court in the matter For all the latest Kolkata News download Indian Express App More Top NewsBy: IANS | Mumbai | Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has criticised their tactical and physical frailties after a 4-0 thrashing at Paris St Germain in the last 16 left them on the brink of their earliest Champions League exit in a decade The five-times European champions were crushed in every aspect of the first-leg clash by Unai Emery’s side suffering their heaviest defeat in Europe since 2013 and under coach Luis Enrique who appeared ruffled in front of the media “They (PSG) played much better than us and they overwhelmed us physically” Busquets told Catalan television network TV3 “They pressed us harder they were much better tactically than us they had a plan and executed it how they wanted to and they were the better team” The midfielder also appeared to criticise the team’s preparation for the game adding: “We expected something else but that’s what can happen We hope to be able to turn things around at the Nou Camp but I can’t lie it’s very difficult” Luis Enrique cut an uneasy figure in an interview with TV3 which he cut short saying: “Stop looking for more reasons This is my responsibility and I hope you use the same tone now we have lost as when we win” In his news conference Luis Enrique said his side were utterly outplayed although he rejected suggestions he had not prepared his players properly for the high pressing game PSG carried out to perfection “We weren’t surprised at all we had spoken about their pressing before the game but that doesn’t mean you can overcome it We lost so many individual duels PSG played as we expected and played at their best and we did not” he said “It’s pretty simple Our opponents were better than us with and without the ball They won battles they were more effective and the result clearly reflects what happened I don’t think I have to give a huge explanation to Barca fans” Luis Enrique gave midfielder Andres Iniesta his first start for a month after his recovery from an ankle injury alongside Busquets who had also only recently returned from a layoff while Gerard Pique had just come back after a muscle injury “We had players that had just recovered but I don’t want to individualise now is not the time I have every confidence in my players it’s time to talk about coaches and I assume full responsibility for this as always” added Luis Enrique “The players are the same ones that have won on other days” For all the latest News A studyundertaken by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) says new rules on cattle transportation and trade of cows in Punjab has aggravated problems for dairy farmers with sinking inter-state cattle breeding trade increasing infertility stray cattle menace and bribery for getting transportation documents The Punjab Gau Sewa Commission says an estimated 16 lakh stray cattle are roaming the roads of Punjab Share This Article Related Article The extension department of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) is flooded with farmers’ queries on how to deal with stray cattle menace and increasing infertility among the cattle especially Holstein Friesian (HF) cross-bred and solutions to dispose them as now abandoning cows may also invite two years of jail term as per proposal of Gau Sewa Commission to the state government The PAU study conducted by the its department of business studies titled ‘Marketing Practices and Problems of Cattle Breeders in Punjab: With Special Reference to Inter State Trade Regulation said that new documentation process for inter-state cattle transport harassment by officials reduced cattle prices due to less demand threats to their lives from self-styled cow protection groups etc are the major problems which farmers in Punjab are facing currently Following the responses from 150 cattle breeders in Punjab it was found that only 9 per cent of them participate in cattle fairs and exhibitions outside Punjab mainly due to the tedious process of getting certificate from deputy commissioner and vet officer (which takes almost 15-20 days) “The state has 1824 lakh female exotic/cross-bred cattle of which 1134 lakh are adult milch cows Cattle buyers from neighbouring states and north-east states preferred purchasing of crossbred cows from Punjab But a new amendment in inter-state cattle trade has restricted the cattle breeders from selling their cows to the neighbouring state farmers Punjab farmers are losing market and prices of cattle have fallen” said Gurbir Singh a PhD scholar at PAU who has co-authored the study with guide Assistant Professor Sukhmani With 80 per cent of cattle in Punjab being high maintenance cross-breeds the state dairy farmers say they are facing a serious financial threat because of the continuing fall in the price of milch cattle A farmer spends Rs 70000 to 75000 to produce a milch cow but the sale price has fallen from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 60000 The farmers surveyed for the study also said they were losing up to 25 per cent of their income to extortion by self-styled cow protection groups in giving bribes to officials and the increased cost of transporting cattle A GADVASU scientist speaking to The Indian Express said “it needs to be understood that a majority of stray cattle roaming in Punjab are not indigenous breeds but cross-bred ones who hold no religious value” Farmers he said never abandoned indigenous breeds such as Gir Sahiwal Red Sindhi Tharparkar “Slaughtering is the only solution to tackle stray cattle menace Most of stray cattle are HF cross-bred after they fail to conceive and turn infertile and they are turning infertile because farmers are incurring losses and they are unable to meet their nutritional requirement We have increased milk productivity to such high levels that once a cow does not get required nutrition she starts getting infertile Every farmer cannot afford Rs 500 per day to raise an infertile animal So he abandons it leading to more stray cattle menace” he said speaking on condition of anonymity “With the government policy being what it is the university cannot come out openly in favour of cow slaughter” he said Dr B K Bansal head medicine GADVASU said stray cattle can lead to serious diseases like brucellosis (leading to abortions among pregnant women) which can spread from animals to humans “Cross -bred are facing more reproductive failures leading to losses for farmers Thus we are promoting indigenous breeds like Sahiwal” he said For all the latest Ludhiana News download Indian Express App More Top NewsWritten by Express News Service | Mohali | Published: June 23 2013 3:36 am Related
